Luisa and I are struck by the parallels between the culture of Olympic athletes and the culture of Medicine. Olympic athletes are at the top of their game, admired and revered for their excellence, fortitude and grit. They go through a lifetime of self sacrifice to achieve new heights in their field.

As physicians, we give up decades of our lives to become physicians, and all of us in our community know all too well the sacrifices required to not only become but continue to be a physician.

Both cultures- that of Olympic athletes, and that of medicine- are cultures of silence. In this article AP reports that 1 in 3 Olympic athletes reports mental illness- likely an underreported statistic. In the recent 2021 Medscape survey 90% of physicians are reporting symptoms of depression, and 13% report suicidal ideation, also likely underreported because of the continued stigma of mental health.

We believe strongly and deeply that is is up to us- our current and future generations medicine- to change and revolutionize this culture of silence. To change our culture to one where both asking for and receiving help are viewed as a sign of strength.

Just as these brave Olympic athletes have done so - for not only their own well-being, but for the well-being of everyone in their world.

How many of you have a friend who lifts you up, loves you unconditionally, gives you hope and inspires you to be your most joyful and best self every single day? We stumbled across each other after years apart, and know that we are not only each others' raft of otters, but a safe space where we are free to be ourselves-- our most joyful, laughing, happy selves! Since starting our Pink Coat, MD community, we have now come to love so many other women physicians in our community as not only friends, but as family. How many of you have read WOLFPACK by Abby Wambach, former captain of the Women's U.S. Soccer and two time Olympic Gold Medalist? Each and every single time we read it, we are blown away by the power and simplicity of Abby's New Rules of Leadership -- that we are stronger together as a pack, as a team, than we ever can be alone. It is when we come together, in our collective passion and spirit, that incredible things and seemingly impossible change is possible.

It is easy to become overwhelmed, when we think about all of the things that are wrong and broken in our world. When we think about all that we wish was different in modern healthcare. When we think about all that we desperately want to be better, so that other women coming up after us, and future generations of young women and girls who aspire to become doctors, do not have to struggle or suffer as we have.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed. What helps us, is to focus on the vision of the world we want for our daughters and granddaughters.

What kind of future, culture and practice of medicine
do we want for them?

We remind ourselves that we are part of the Transition Team. We are part of a hundreds year old transition from the Old culture of medicine, to a New and more loving, joyful, and compassionate culture of medicine. One where we are proud and excited for our daughters to become physicians, like us.

And then we focus on one thing. One thing we can each do now, to make things a little better. So that someday, the ripple effect of a million small things done by all of us, amount to the huge change we all thought was impossible.

We believe in this vision, and we believe in our power

to create this together.
